Designing the Zone
In my client's kitchen, I designated one specific counter area as the landing zone. This spot—near the entrance—is where things are allowed to land temporarily. A small tray contains keys and wallet. A basket holds mail awaiting processing.
The rule is simple: items can land here, but they must be processed within 24 hours. The zone contains the mess; the deadline prevents permanent accumulation.
The Rest of the Kitchen
Because the landing zone exists, other counter space stays clear. The cooking area remains pristine. The visual calm of clean counters is preserved, while the practical reality of daily life is acknowledged.
